Inspection is by its very nature repetitive, requires accuracy, and can in some cases be hazardous for the inspectors safety. The reality is that humans often are ill-suited to be performing these tasks. We get tired, lose our concentration, are not motivated, or simply not physically capable of accurately monitoring deviations from the norm.
Robotic systems provide a possible solution for all of these problems. They do not get tired, are consistently accurate, can be developed in shapes and forms that accomadate the environment they are working in. Furthermore, the technology to make robust systems is upon us. Out of all possible robotic applications, it is one of the most promising in turns of broad societal and industrial acceptance and commercial succes.
